Islamic Council of N.E. first quarterly meeting of January 28th/2012 at Wayland Islamic center:

President’s Report:

First of all, let me take this opportunity to thank our outgoing President Imam Suleiman Muhammad, who has served the Council with excellence during his tenure. Let the minutes of this meeting reflect that the Council earnestly recognizes his outstanding services.

As American Muslims, the major challenge we face today is the rising tide of Islamophobia, and anti- Sharia’h movement. Americans are constantly being misled by interest groups. This is a disservice to Muslim and non-Muslim mainstream Americans, and a divisive one. The question is what role can we play in facing off this challenge and safe guarding our future and the future of our children as Muslims? We all must be concerned about this threat and do some serious thinking as community leaders. Generally, Americans are very understanding and generous, only if we reach out to them and connect with them through the shared values we cherish. Let’s use Islamophobia in reverse to bring people together and build up bridges.

We cannot ignore our younger generation either. They need our constant guidance and support; and need to be couched how to deal with anti-Islamic sentiments. Therefore, the ICNE Conference 2012 at WPI should focus on this issue. In addition, we should expand our scholarship program to support our talented children; and, at the same time, encourage the participation of sisters in the Council, as their role is critical in the upbringing of our children.

Similarly, for the Council to be effective and have a stronger voice, it needs to broaden its base by bringing more Masajid and other Islamic organizations on its platform.

Finally, the community is growing and so are its problems and expectations with the Council. The Council needs a critical evaluation of its strengths and resources to see how best it can meet the needs of its constituency within the scope of its charter.
